City firefighter receives 2 years' probation after DUI crash

Last updated 6 years ago

A Baltimore City firefighter received probation before judgment last week in a 2010 drunken-driving crash that left a woman and her son hospitalized.

Christopher Kyle Johnson, 30, was placed on two years of supervised probation for a traffic violation, while five counts of second-degree assault charges were dropped.

His attorney, Bruce Robinson, said Johnson had no previous arrests or offenses, and he did not have any points on his license. He participated in a 13-week outpatient alcohol treatment program, he said.

"The judge was able to weigh the pros and the cons of this case," Robinson said, adding that Johnson had received numerous awards from the Fire Department for his service. He received a promotion in October.

"He did not live up to his own standards, and he accepts responsibility," Robinson said.

Johnson, a resident of Halethorpe, crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a Ford Taurus carrying a family of five in the 3000 block of Frederick Road in April 2010, according to the accident report. Johnson's blood- alcohol level after the crash was 0.16 percent, double the 0.08 percent threshold considered to be under the influence by Maryland law, the report said.

Heather Faulkner was driving the Taurus, and her brother, Thomas Johnson, was in the passenger seat. Three children were in the back: Johnson's daughter Tylia, who was 2; and Faulkner's children, daughter Amira Jennings, who was 7; and son Jermaine Lee, who was 10.

Faulkner and Jermaine spent several weeks in the hospital. She suffered a broken hip and a fractured pelvis. Jermaine sustained injuries to his face and head that left him disfigured. The family could not be reached for comment.

Roman Clark, a Fire Department spokesman, said Johnson had been on administrative duty and was suspended from shift work between Aug. 21 and Dec. 17.

Johnson has served five years in the department.
